This is my second post of the series: easy sustainable goals you can achieve this week. Every second week I’ll share five small challenges that are easy to add to your daily routine. You don’t have to change your whole life overnight because mall steps can still make a big difference.

Get a reusable cup

If you love to go to cafés and get your daily caramel latte, like me, this new habit could reduce waste and even save you some money. Bring your own cup. If you order a drink to go it usually comes in a plastic cup. You use them once and then throw them away. Same goes for the plastic straw. This way a single iced water can contribute to a lot of plastic waste. Bringing your own cute little cup can help you reduce a lot of plastic waste, keep your coffee warm longer, and make it look more aesthetic.

PS: Many cafés even offer discounts if you bring your own cup. This way I keep on saving about 20% of the usual price. Because lets be honest coffee has gotten way to expensive.

Turn off the tap

Whenever you don’t need water, you should turn off the tap. For example, while shampooing your hair you can turn the water off, or while putting soap on your hands you don’t need the tap running. You can save a lot of water this way. A single household is responsible for a lot of water waste. By just making these small changes, you can save more water than you might think.

Buy something second hand

Whether it’s furniture, clothes, or even electronics, buying second hand can help you reduce your carbon footprint. Clothes are the easiest and most accessible option and offer many benefits. Apps like Vinted or eBay offer a large variety, but second hand or thrift stores also carry many nice pieces. By buying second hand, you can ensure the longevity of certain products and help them get reused. Furthermore, it’s often cheaper. Try going into a thrift store this week. Goodwill, for example, is another good place to look for second hand products. Maybe you’re even planning on refurnishing your room, so you can go on eBay or Facebook Marketplace and take a look there.

If you meet up with your friends

Try to drive together. Whether you go to church on Sunday or to uni or college, you can text your friends and see if you can drive together using one car. This will not only save both of you gas money but will also reduce CO₂ emissions. Even while planning a coffee date, you can try to organize a ride together.
